This painting was made using the Realist Painting technique.
In a realist painting, the technical accuracy and level of detail are so high that the subject appears to be almost real. It evolved in accordance with the criteria of the Académie Français des Beaux-Arts of the 19th century, and as a result, it is often referred to as Academic painting. The method is extremely time-consuming as it is based on four succeeding coats of paint (the picture is painted four times!), each of which has more oil than the one before it. This leads to finer details and greater tridimensionality. However, realist painting differs from photographic painting since it maintains the typical charm of pictorial art.
