A common scene in the sertão, the semi-arid area of northeastern Brazil.
Having grown up in such an environment, this is a type of scene that I know very well. It depicts all the difficulties, the resiliency, and the hopes of the people living in this area and in other economically depressed areas of the world. The cactus on the right (Mandacaru, Cereus jamacaru) is regarded as a local symbol of resistance to adversity.
